As an examination board rather than an admission test, RBSE registers school and private candidates, sets question papers across the science, commerce, arts and vocational streams, conducts written and practical examinations at centres throughout the state's districts, evaluates answer books and publishes results, mark sheets and migration certificates. It also administers supplementary examinations, rechecking and scrutiny requests, and coordinates with the state open school for candidates studying outside regular schools. Its Class 12 result is accepted as the qualifying examination by colleges and universities and by national and state entrance tests in engineering, medicine, law, design and central university admission.

Students planning higher education have to track the board date sheet and the separate entrance test notifications at the same time, since the two are issued by different bodies and their schedules can overlap during the same months of the year.
